“US Airways and American Airlines on Tuesday announced they’ve reached a deal with the Justice Department to let their merger proceed, clearing the way for a $17.2-billion merger that will make Charlotte Douglas International the second-busiest hub in the world’s biggest airline.” Charlotte Observer  Read more here

What does this mean to you and me?  It means that your US Airways and American Airlines miles will be combined in January 2014.

American and US Airways will start offering reciprocal frequent flier programs on Jan. 7. US Airways will also leave its international Star Alliance – it stopped selling Star Alliance tickets several months ago – and join the American-led Oneworld alliance sometime in the first quarter next year.”

Now is the time to build up US Airways miles before the merger.  One of the most lucrative ways to earn US Airways miles is with the US Airways Premier World MasterCard.  Barclaycard offers a personal (up to 40,000 bonus miles) and business version (25,000 bonus miles) of this credit card.  See the details below.

If you haven’t got both of these credit card versions, this is a must as these cards will disappear very soon.  This is similar to when Continental was merging with United some years ago and you could still sign up for the Continental credit card for awhile before the merger was complete.

Sign up for a free E-miles account which will be automatically linked to your Us Airways Dividend Miles account. If you opt-in for their E-miles emails, you will receive opportunities about once every two or three weeks through your email account that allow you to browse a few (rarely more than three) promotional offers.

Once your account balance gets to 500 points you can have them deposited into your Dividend Miles account where they will be added on to the current balance.

Similar to the E-miles offer, E-Rewards allows members to accrue points from taking online surveys and exchange them for US Airways Dividend Miles. It is free to join E-Rewards and one can earn up to 2000 miles points per year through the program. You do have to be invited, however, to participate. You can increase the likelihood of receiving an invitation by updating your US Airways account profile to receive Dividend Miles News and Offers.

This earning opportunity is open to residents in certain states only (CT, IL, MD, NJ, NY, PA, and TX) but those eligible have an amazing deal in front of them. Once you’ve signed up for a personal or business account with Energy Plus Company and remain a customer for two months you get a 5,000 bonus miles deposited into your US Airways Dividend Miles account.

You also get two miles for every dollar spent on the supply end of the energy service, and most exciting is there are no surprise fees or long-term commitments required.

Renew subscriptions to your favorite magazines, go to the US Airways Dividend Miles website and sign up from there. The costs are regularly priced and you can earn about 200-300 bonus miles for each subscription. The list of magazines is extensive and features just about everything you’d see on a newsstand, plus more.

US Airways has partnered with a program called Thanks Again, which rewards you Dividend Miles when you shop or dine at participating local businesses. There are thousands of companies that qualify, including restaurants, spas, retails stores, golf courses, dry cleaners, and more, and most of them offer a few points for every dollar spent.

Participating in the Thanks Again program is easy and it costs nothing on the consumer’s end. All you need to do is enroll at the Thanks Again website and register up to 5 credit cards that you use most often. The rewards will automatically be dispensed when you make purchases at qualifying locations with one of the cards you have on file.

There are many more earning opportunities you can check out here.  I’ve just highlighted a few that are relatively easy and some free.  Like I mentioned above, the best way to earn a large amount of miles quickly is from the Barclaycard US Airways Premier World Mastercard.  If your credit is good right now, I would recommend this option as this will boost your account fast and give you the ability to earn extra miles from additional spending during the holiday season.
