American Express Starwood Preferred Credit Card

American Express is currently offering 30,000 bonus points for new applications of the Starwood Preferred Guest Card. This offer was available last summer and seems to be a annual trend for American Express and the Starwood Preferred Guest Card.  This is a great offer since the normal bonus is 25,000 points.  Starwood points are highly valuable and difficult points to earn other than staying at properties, buying a timeshare and using the AMEX Starwood credit card.
You could use 30,000 Starwood points for a 7 free nights at The Westin Resort & Spa, Puerto Vallarta or any other Category 2 hotel and 10 free nights at any Category 1.  Now that’s a great bonus!
In my opinion this is an extremely valuable rewards card.  I carry it in my wallet and use it regularly at Costco.  The Starwood points have so much flexibility and the resorts you can stay in worldwide are the cream of the crop.  Two of my most recent favorite stays were Hotel Alfonso Seville, Spain (May 2015) and The Turnberry Resort, Southern Coast of Scotland (April 2013); both fabulous properties and incredible stays for our family.  Check out the many lux Starwood properties here.
Starwood points can’t be compared to Club Carlson, Marriott, IHG, Hyatt or Hilton points in my opinion.  They are valued at a higher level because of the Starwood program and how much money they translate too.
I love IHG & Club Carlson points for great family stays but if you want luxury then Starwood delivers just that.  I can never have enough Starwood points and I’m extremely selective about when and where I redeem them.  The Starwood Preferred Guest Card is absolutely a keeper card for me and not one just for the bonus.

  1. You can transfer these points to your favorite airline.  Whenever you transfer 20,000 points you receive a 5,000 mile bonus.  So 20,000 points equals 25,000 to most all airlines.
  2. The program has a Cash & Points option which gives you huge savings at high end hotels.
For example, when making a booking you can use only 4,000 points and $60 for one (1) night in a $300/$400+ room.  It’s a great way to stretch your points and stay in some really nice hotels.
  3. 5th night free option – I love this option.

30,000 StarpointsWelcome bonus offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product. To be eligible to earn 30,000 bonus Starpoints, you must use The Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card to complete $3,000 of eligible spending by the end of your first 3 months of Card Membership, based on the date of your Card approval. Bonus points will appear on your Starwood Preferred Guest statement 8–12 weeks after you reach the spend threshold. Eligible purchases can be made by the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on a single Card account. Eligible purchases do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. Additional Card Members on your account are not eligible for this offer. In rare instances, your period to spend $3,000 may be shorter than 3 months if there is a delay in receiving your Card. Also, purchases may fall outside of the 3 month period in some cases, such as a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction. (For example, if you buy goods online, the purchase date may be the date the goods are shipped). For questions regarding your Card account, please call the number on the back of your Card. If your application is not approved by 9/14/2015 because it is incomplete or in pending status, you will not be eligible for the 30,000 bonus Starpoints offer even if your application is subsequently approved. American Express reserves the right to modify or revoke offer at any time.

You will notice now the new terminology regarding who can qualify for the bonus offer. “This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product.”  If you aren’t aware, American Express use to allow a person to get another card of the same type and receive the bonus if they did not have the card for over 12 months.  So for those of you who have never had a Starwood card, there are two possible bonuses here, one business card and one personal card each with a 30,000 bonus point offer.  Or if you’ve had the personal version but the the business, you qualify for the business card.
