Where do I begin?  My husband’s 40th birthday getaway was like a dream.  Our trip and stay at the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills couldn’t have been more spectacular.  I spent a good amount of time planning this three day getaway and I wanted it to be totally rememberable for my husband and it was.  He was blown away to say the least.  He never expected or guess anything I had planned.  Each part of our trip was a complete surprise.  I loved seeing the look on his face as I showered him with surprise after surprise.  So here is a recap of our trip. (Part 1)
Grandma Case arrives the night before.  We do a nice birthday dinner and cake that evening with our boys. The kids are really excited about Grandma staying with them and I am very nervous about leaving them.  My husband & I have both been away separately but never both of us at the same time.  After 8 years without even one night alone together I’d say we are way overdue.  So I put my nervous Momma feelings aside and focus on the goal; alone time with my sexy man!
The morning of his birthday we leave and head for Beverly Hills. The anticipation was really building for my husband because all he knew is we were driving south.  He didn’t know if we were getting on a plane, a train, a boat or where in the world we were going.  I just told him we needed to leave at 5:00 a.m.  So we drove from our town, San Luis Obispo, three and a half hours to Beverly Hills and arrived at the SLS Hotel.  Upon arriving at the SLS Hotel we were greeted with very warm and friendly service.  The staff quickly took our car & bags.  It was just a little before 9:00 a.m. so we were a bit early for checkin.  The front desk pre-registered us and told us our room was almost ready for early checkin at 10:00 a.m.  They also confirmed that we were upgrade to a Studio Suite on the 4th floor.

After checking in we headed to Tres Restaurant at the hotel for breakfast.  The ambience of the lobby & restaurant are just so Beverly Hills.  Very upscale design and trendy!  All these cozy little areas set up like someone’s fancy livingroom.  Really a very different feel and design.  We loved it!  The food was gourmet, light and delicious.  Not huge portions that leave you feeling heavy.  Just pleasantly full!
After breakfast the first BIG surprise was set to arrive.  All my husband knew was that we were meeting someone out front of the hotel lobby.  As we sat in this chic lobby we were watching some nice rides pull up; Mercedes, BMW’s, etc.  You get the picture.  Then this gorgeous smoking hot red Ferrari pulls up right in front of my husband & I.  The driver calls out to my husband, “Dave come get in and take”.  My husband looks embarrassed like the guy must be mistaking him for someone else.  After the second request, he looks at me and says “Is this part of it?”  I say “Yes, go”!  So he jumps into the Ferrari and off they go for his driving lesson.  He has no idea that I have rented the car for him.  He thinks maybe he is just going for a ride or maybe driving it for an hour.  The driver quickly explains to him that he will be driving it for the next 2 days.  The next thing I know they are back and the valets are opening the doors and I am driving away with my husband in the sweetest hot rod ever!  The look on his face was to die for.  He was just glowing!  Just in total shock but loving every minute of it.  Every time he would gun it my heart would just skip a beat.  The roar of that engine and the instant speed is just absolutely incredible.  Never felt that feeling before.  I can’t imagine what it must have felt like to drive it.  So we cruised all day as you can imagine.  We cruised Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Venice Beach and of course drove to Malibu along Hwy. 1.  The weather was perfect, hot and sunny like a dream day in California.  The days they write about in all those travel guide books.  We were totally living the California life!  But Momma still had another surprise coming!

After several hours of cruising I told my husband that we needed to head for Burbank.  He didn’t mind since we had to get on the freeway and he could really let it fly.  The next thing he knows we are arriving in front of the NBC Studios.  I had got us tickets to be on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.  He is just totally floored.  He loves Jay Leno and neither of us has ever been in the studio audience of a live show taping.  We had a blast!  Such a fun fun thing to do and it’s FREE!  Love it!  We had live music by the band.  We were entertained by the show staff.  Got to see Jay Leno in person and Drew Barrymore was one of the guest.  She is a favorite actress of both of ours.  It was just a cool experience.  Finished up the day with dinner at the famous SmokeHouse across from Warner Bros. Studio.  The SmokeHouse was built in 1946 at the end of WWII and is one of the few L.A. restaurants still around today from that era.  Built beside the world famous Warner Brothers lot in Burbank, Calfornia, the SmokeHouse is a favorite hang out for actors, produces, and anyone in the industry.  The food was great!  I had the prime rib and can highly recommend that meal.  The atmosphere was just fun because it was old and cool as you can see from the red booth seats in the picture.

After dinner we headed back to our pad at the SLS.  I was anxious to see our suite and what surprises they had left in the room.  I had requested a cake but upon arrival the front desk told us they had put some other surprise in our suite.  So the fun begins even before we get to our room.  Take at look at the elevator and you’ll see.  It was just cool and so LA!  You are never alone in that elevator!

Now when we stepped out of the elevator we had another surprise.  There was Jay-Z! right in front of us!  Wow!  We hung with him for a little bit I’d say before we continued to our suite.

Every floor has it’s own pool table but I believe only the 4th floor gets Jay-Z.  When we finally arrived late to our studio suite we were very happy.  It was approx 500 sq. ft and quite roomy for 2 people.  The eating area was set up nicely with a cake, champagne, chocolates & nice note.  The bed was turned down, the lights were dim and the room just oozing with romance!  There were mirrors everywhere you turned.  The walls were mirrors.  The flat screen t.v. was part of the wall mirror.  The bathroom & shower was all completely mirrors.  I would say this hotel’s thing is mirrors.  Very LA!  The cake & treats were delicious.(Note: they were also comped by the hotel)  I tried to take pictures to capture the essence of the suite but it was hard with all the mirrors.  So I decided to do a little video.  So here it is.  This really gives you a better idea of what a studio suite is like at the SLS Hotel should you decided you’ll like to put it on your destination list.  We would highly recommended it if you are going to be coming to Beverly Hills/Los Angeles area and you want a real treat!

Stay tuned for Part 2 of this trip report!  In Part 2, I will detail exactly how this trip was completely paid for by my hobby.  We are just average folks, not high rollers.  This trip is a perfect example that average people like you & me can live like a king & queen once & awhile because of this great hobby.  We wouldn’t have done it without our “travel bank” that Momma is always building.

  1. Thanks so much! I loved writing it and I was smiling too! I hope I can inspire others to realize their dreams of travel and find ways to make it really come true!
