MILEAGE PLUS GIFT CARD EXCHANGE & ULTIMATE REWARDS POINTS
Hmmmm! My wheels are churning tonight! Just came across United’s new MileagePlus Gift Card Exchange program. I haven’t really had the time to try out my ideas yet (they are raw) but I’ll throw them out so you can play around too.
So if you have the Chase Ink Bold card hopefully you know about the power of the “office supplies” purchases (aka gift cards) that earn you 5 points per dollar in Ultimate Rewards points. If not, read this very well written article from one of my favorite bloggers Frequent Miler. He is super knowledgeable on using gift cards to earn huge piles of miles & points. I’ve learned so much from him. You would be wise to read him regularly!
If you don’t already have the Chase Ink Bold, I absolutely recommend it because of the power of the 5x points at office stores which can be used to earn thousands of points via buying gift cards and shopping through the Ultimate Rewards Mall and sometimes earning 20x points per dollar. You can currently earn a very nice 50,000 bonus points for the Chase Ink Bold. Chase also has the Chase Ink Plus which has the same exact benefits but is regular visa card and not a charge card like the Chase Ink Bold. The Chase Ink Plus also currently has a 50,000 bonus point offer. I guess in theory you could get both of these cards and bonuses since they are different card types. I haven’t done it YET but might have too. I got the Chase Ink Bold earlier in the year and I’m having a load of fun with it. I figure if they don’t initially approved me for the Ink Plus I can just say I’d prefer the benefits of the traditional visa over the charge card that you have to pay in full every month. I can then have then close my Ink Bold and open the Ink Plus for another 50,000 bonus points. Although, I always really pay everything in full every week. If you do get this card, I would highly recommend that you follow Frequent Miler. He will keep you up on all the ways to earn huge miles/points with gift cards and the Chase Ink Bold/Plus cards. It’s his specialty and he is very knowledgeable on this topic.
So I was thinking the MileagPlus Gift Card Exchange and that it might be a marriage made in heaven for Chase Ink Bold card holders and United frequent flyers. Theoretically you would buy gift cards from any office supply store (Office Max, Staples, Office Depot), earning you 5 points per dollar in Ultimate Rewards points and then exchange the gift cards for United miles use the MileagePlus Gift Card Exchange program. So you would be earning both Ultimate Rewards points that can be transferred to United miles and then additional United miles from the exchange of the gift cards. I will be testing out my ideas and I’ll post my results. Not sure if this would work out to be a very profitable way to buy miles but I’m going to test it out and see. If you have already tried this concept, please comment and share your advice and/or success stories.
