As if the American Express Bluebird wasn’t awesome already, it just keeps getting better!  I have always been a huge fan of American Express. They are in a class of their own.  Everything they do, it’s first class.  I remember always thinking American Express was so elite when I was a kid and they really have stayed true to my perception.

They have just added some great new features to their American Express Bluebird Prepaid card.  The one that stands out to me as extremely beneficial for the mile and point collector is the new checking writing feature.  You can now write checks from your Bluebird.  The Bluebird was a great earning tool without this feature but it’s even stronger with this new added benefit.  Read more below about the checking writing feature; how to use it, order free checks (50-100), and the other features recently added.

Bluebird Checks

Introducing Bluebird Checks with no overdraft or stop payment fees. You can now write worry-free checks for things you need, such as rent, doctor’s visit, or a school fundraiser. And because you must pre-authorize the check before you write it, you know the check will be covered when cashed. Plus, you never have to spend time balancing your checkbook, as funds are immediately deducted from your Account. Bluebird Members have access to one free checkbook until August 2013. Thereafter, Bluebird Members enrolled in direct deposit can receive their first checkbook of 50 checks at no charge, otherwise direct deposit and non-direct deposit users can order a book of 50 checks for $26 (including shipping).

  • Log into your Bluebird account
  • Click on “My Account” on the top right bar.
  • Click on “Order Bluebird Checks”.  You will be given the option to order 50 or 100 checks.  Both are 100% free.  I would recommend getting 100.  Even if you don’t think you’ll use them all at least you’ll be stocked up.  I just ordered mine and it says they will arrive within 10 days.

Tax Refunds and Government Payments

You can now direct deposit government payments such as tax refunds, U.S. military and government paychecks, and social security benefits, in addition to your salary direct deposit, into your Bluebird Account. To set up direct deposit, log in to your Bluebird Account and click on “deposit money”, then select “set up direct deposit” and follow the instructions.

FDIC Insurance

The funds in your Bluebird Account are now FDIC insured*, providing you with added peace of mind. To learn more about FDIC insurance for Bluebird visit

    1. @Leslie – There are other ways to load Bluebird for sure but not with a credit card. You can load with a debit card at Walmart but only $100. So Vanilla is the only way for mile and point collectors really.
