AMEX has recently increased the sign-up bonus on their Business Gold Rewards card.  This year there has been no bonus on this card.  They are currently offering 50,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $5,000 within the first 3 months of cardmembership.

AMEX has made a few one day offers of 75,000 bonus points this year but these had a very high $10,000 minimum spend.  I did grab one of these offers myself last month and I’m currently working on the minimum spend.  I don’t know if any of these one day offers will surface again but if they do I’ll be sure to let you know as soon as I know.

The current 50,000 bonus point offer is available to the public until November 26, 2012

This card offers:

  • 3 points per dollar spent on airfare (up to $100,000 per year)
  • 2 points per dollar on advertising, gas, and shipping (up to $100,000 per year)
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else
  • No annual fee first year ($175)
  • Access to American Express’ Open Savings program – Automatic discounts when you use your card a certain vendors (i.e. for example 3% at Hyatt, 5% at Courtyard by Marriott, 10% at Hertz, 5% at Office Max and 5% at Fedex)

The minimum spend might be a little steep on this card but remember you have 3 months.  In my opinion and many others, these points are very valuable with so many redemption options.  You can check out the Membership Rewards Program here and see all the options you have with Membership Rewards points.  The AMEX Membership Rewards program and Chase Ultimate Rewards programs are both considered to be the top two point programs currently available to point collectors.  If you need some creative ideas how to meet the minimum spend requirement, check out my “Ways to Meet Minimum Spends” page here.  Take a look specifically at the “Payment Services” section.  There are costs involved with some of these options but the benefits sometimes out way the minimal costs involved to use the services.  I’ve used many of these services myself and they have made minimum spends very easy.

NOTE:  This offer is not available to applicants who have had this product or any Business Gold, Green or Platinum Card® account within the last 12 months.

What can you do with Membership Rewards points?  Almost anything!

  • Book Travel or Pay with points
  • Buy Gift Cards
  • Use for Dining or Entertainment
  • Shop with points
  • Reimburse your expenses
  • Transfer points to loyalty programs

That being said, I believe the most powerful use of Membership Rewards points is the ability to hold them in your account and transfer the points to your desired loyalty program when you need to.  Membership Rewards points transfer to the following programs:

One World

Star Alliance

Starwood British Airways  Delta

Air Canada

Virgin America
Hilton  Iberia  Air France/KLM Aeroplan Virgin Atlantic
Best Western  Cathy Pacific  Alitalia Singapore  El Al
Jumeirah  Asia Miles  Aeromexico All Nippon Frontier
        Jet Blue

Bottom line this is a great offer for those of you who can take advantage of it.  Remember you don’t have to own a “business” per say to apply for business cards.  Just apply with your social security number as a sole proprietor.
