I have to admit to you all that I did my first “mattress run”.  Okay…let me stop there!  I’m starting to use terminology that not everyone knows.  So let me explain.  If you are a hard core miles/points hound like me this is Miles & Points 101 for you so you can skip to a few lines down.  If you are just learning this hobby then you are wondering, “What in the world is a mattress run”.  Well, let me give you a short definition.  It’s where you stay at a particular hotel solely for the purpose of earning a large points bonus for the nights stayed. Hotel programs are always doing promotions and bonuses for stays.  Some miles and point collectors will stay in 3 different hotels over trip to earn large bonuses.  While other mile and point collectors are totally not into this.  I have never been into mattress runs myself.  When I stay in hotels I am always redeeming my points and staying for free.  But when Club Carlson came out this their summer Big Night Giveaway promotion they had me.  Actually, I really did a mattress run with Club Carlson last year for the Big Night Giveaway.  So I was just waiting anxiously hoping they would run the promotion again this year and they did!  WOOPIE!!!  I earned 100,000 Club Carlson points last year.  I stayed 2 nights up in the Bay Area.  The promotion was running during the month of December and I was having surgery at Stanford. (Nothing serious, just some kidney stones -no worries I’m not going anywhere).  So I needed to stay 1 night before surgery and 1 night after I was discharged before we made the 3 1/2 hr drive home to San Luis Obispo.  So we stayed 1 night at the Radisson Hotel San Francisco Airport Bay Front and the other at the Radisson Hotel San Jose Airport.  It was a bit out of our way as Stanford is in Palo Alto but with the 50,000 point 1 night stay bonus we didn’t mind the inconvenience.  Or should I say I didn’t mind the inconvenience and my hubby agreed.  I was in huge pain afterwards so I could careless.

So this year I couldn’t make any trips happen for our family near a Radisson during the promotion period (May 15 – July 15, 2012).  So I decided that the kiddos and I would just go check-in to our local property, the Radisson Hotel Santa Maria.  The value of the 50,000 Club Carlson points is really super valuable especially for international properties.  Club Carlson is worldwide and their properties stretch to some incredible hot travel destinations.  For example, I am going to Prague, Cezh Republic this August for 1 week.  I’ll be staying in the Park Inn Prague for 15,000 points per night.  I’m using the Club Carlson points I earned last year.  This hotel is in a great riverside location and close walking distance to all the major attractions. Nothing fancy but we don’t need it because we’ll never be at the hotel.  Save the luxury accommodations for my Starwood points.  You can be sure I’ll blog all about my trip and this property.  There are also some great properties I have my eye on in Ireland like Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, GalwayRadisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Cork, and Radisson Blu Hotel Belfast for next years family vacation.  So because I highly value the Club Carlson points I decided we’d just enjoy a nice daycation!  I called one of my best girlfriends and asked her if she like to join us with her kiddos.  You should have seen us all checking in with all our stuff for just an afternoon.  Had a nice packed home lunch in the room and then we headed down to the pool for a swim.  We had so much fun swimming in the pool and relaxing in the hot tub.  I was so sleepy driving home.  Not my normal Tuesday afternoon.  You s
hould have seen the room when we left.  You would have thought we were there much longer.  We also hit the local Boomers, played miniature golf and even stopped for frozen yougrt on the way home (only a 30 min. drive).  Special thanks to another reader and Flyertalk friend we had a free round of golf and $10 of free tokens with a Boomers coupon.  If you have a local Boomers get your coupon here.
