BARCLAYCARD ARRIVAL WORLD MASTERCARD – MY NEW WALLET CARD!
Like many I got the Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard for the nice 40,000 bonus point offer. I honestly figured it would be a card for the drawer and not a wallet card. In fall of 2013, I began to use the card and explore the redemption options. I initially didn’t give it much attention as I have my go to programs: Chase Ultimate Rewards and American Express Membership Rewards. With points in both of these programs, along with all your other frequent flyer and hotel accounts, you are pretty dialed for “free travel”. Now after using the Barclay Arrival World MasterCard for awhile I’ve realized that Barclay has something that no lender is competing with right now and it’s HUGE in my book! Here it is in a nutshell. Almost instant earning and burning power! Now, what do I mean by that? Well, with the Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard, you make a purchase which earns you 2x per dollar on everything and you receive those points to use in your account as soon as the purchase transitions from a “pending transaction” to an “actual charge”. Love it! This is a feature that no other rewards card on the market currently has and it’s powerful for travelers.
Now, let me give you a real life example. I was just in Paris with my family this month. Maybe you saw my tweets! If not, you can check out some of our pictures here. Anyway, I booked at nice bed and breakfast in the Latin Quarter. The week stay cost was $1100 and I had racked up almost 100,000 points with my Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard to pay for this trip expense. Prior to leaving I didn’t have enough points to cover the full cost but I had no worries. With this card’s great feature, I knew I could return the next week and make some purchases to push my balance to the amount needed to redeem for that purchase. I planned to pay bills and do some other creative spending to achieve my goal. But with Barclay’s feature you even have 90 days in which to redeem points for any given “eligible travel purchase”(i.e. airline, hotel/motel, resorts, car rental, tours, rail). So essentially, it’s like credit on your trip expenses. Travel now, earn and pay later! How about that! Gotta love it!
This feature is so huge in my book that it makes up for the lack of other features that would make you put this card in the drawer. The second great feature is you receive 10% back every time you redeem points for an “eligible purchase”. So when I redeemed that 100,000 points, I got back 10,000 points. So basically I paid only $900 instead of $1,000. Very generous rebate! Score number two!
So with that said, this is why the Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard will stay in my wallet and is now a part of my earning strategy for all my fun family adventures. My earning strategy in the mile and point game is DIVERSIFICATION! Loyalty gets you stuck without “free travel” but diversification comes through every time. I have so many mile and point accounts in so many programs, I’d hate to even admit the number. But with miles and points everywhere it’s pretty easy to travel anywhere in the world for next to nothing!
Bottom line, get the Barclaycard Arrival World MasterCard! It will be a huge asset for your “travel bank”. I know because it’s working wonders for me. I’m now cranking up the spend on it for our family’s Alaskan Adventure in June. I’ll be paying for expenses like hotels, rental cars, and some sweet glacier tours with this card. I actually made some deposits today on a couple B&B’s which I don’t have the points to pay yet, but no worries they’ll be in there in less than 90 days.
NOTE: You can redeem points for cash back statement credits, gift cards, and also merchandise but this value is terrible. Don’t use this method. Strictly stick to redeeming points for “travel eligible purchases” to get the top value for your points.
Below is all the card details. The minimum spend did increase (bummer) but still totally doable for most families in a month or so even without creative spending. Increased minimum spends for credit card bonuses is a trend we have been seeing since last year. The good old days of “pack of gum” offers aren’t happening often but you can be sure if I spot a winner I’ll let you know. If you need any help, remember I’ll always available to you!
